Background / über Varanasi

VARANASI

Varanasi is a large city in the northeast of India. Officially, the population is at 1.3 millions. But there are presumably around 2.5 million people living in this metropolis. This makes Varanasi the third largest city in the Indian federal state of Uttar Pradesh.
For Hindus, Varanasi is the most important place of pilgrimage. It is said that Shiva the mighty god of creation and destruction has chosen Varanasi as his residence. Moreover, the city is located at the river Ganges worshipped as the goddess Ganga. According to legend, the holy water possesses the force to wash away sins and to purify the soul. Therefore, tens of thousands come every day, especially in the early hours of the morning, to bathe in the river and worship the goddess. On the city's steep bank there are more than 80 bathing places (Ghats) with long stairs leading like roots down to the river.

LIVING CONDITIONS

The people here live cramped together and share their little space with cows and goats. There's often dozens of families with more than hundred members living in a single house. Some dwell in the ruins of collapsed buildings or in canopied corners directly on the street. If people have jobs, their monthly income is around 17 – 40 €.
Children of poor families have to sell tea or flowers to help feeding the family. More often than not they lack time and money for an education, even for the most fundamental basic knowledge.
This is why Learn for Life was founded – to make education more accessible for all.
